A Guide to Freeze-Dried Fruits

a guide to freeze-dried fruits

You know it, at Soul Fruit, we are all about flavour and texture. That’s why we offer dried fruits in two different textures: chewy slices or crunchy chips. There are no rules, it really is up to you, some people would die for a chew, while others can't get enough crunch on a daily basis.

While our chewy soft-dried fruits may be more familiar to dried fruit novices, when they taste our crunchy freeze-dried fruits for the first time, magic happens.

Most people have encountered freeze-dried fruits in their life without even realising it. Think of cocktails, baked goods, or granola. Yet, little do people know about this ancient preservation technique. For instance, did you know that the Incas were already using it to preserve their potatoes?

What is Freeze Dried Fruit?

The freeze-drying method, also known as lyophilisation, is used to remove moisture from fruit while keeping all its nutritional goodies intact! Unlike some conventional drying methods, which often involve high temperatures and can lead to vitamin degradation, freeze-drying preserves all those essential vitamins and nutrients without any of the heat-induced stress. So, next time you're munching on some freeze-dried snacks, remember, it's not just tasty, it’s also a condensed powerhouse of health benefits!

But what are Freeze Dried Fruit Chips?

Freeze dried fruit has a unique crispy texture that's different to traditional soft dried fruit. But where most freeze dried fruits can be quite powdery and dissolve when eating, we wanted ours to have a crisp like crunch. So we have played around with our freeze drying settings to maintain the fibrous structure of the fruit better, which gives our freeze-dried fruit chips the satisfying crunch we love so much.

Are Freeze-Dried Fruits Healthy?

Absolutely! Freeze-dried fruits maintain most of their original nutrients, making them a healthy choice for snacking. They're rich in vitamins, fibre, and antioxidants, providing a burst of nutrition in each crunchy bite.

Are Dried Fruits As Healthy As Fresh?

While fresh fruits are fantastic, freeze-dried fruits offer a convenient alternative. They retain most of their nutrients during the freeze-drying process, making them a close contender to fresh fruits in terms of health benefits. But we will never say it enough, fresh fruits will always beat any other kind of snacks that you might find out there!

Can Freeze-Dried Fruit Be Rehydrated?

Yes, you can rehydrate freeze-dried fruits by soaking them in water for a few minutes. They'll plump up and regain some of their original texture, though they won't fully resemble fresh fruits. Try it with our red crunchy freeze-dried Dragon fruit chips, mix it with water or milk, and let the natural purple colour of the fruit infuse your drink!

Can Freeze Dried Fruit Go Bad?

If stored properly (like in our colourful bag made of recycled plastic), these fruits will last for months or even years without spoiling. Once opened, if you can go on more than one hour without devouring them, just keep them in an airtight container away from moisture and heat.
Freeze-drying is actually one of the oldest preservation methods still in use. In the 13th century, the Inca innovatively freeze-dried potatoes into chuño. They exposed the spuds to freezing mountain nights and efficiently squeezed out water under the Andean sun during the day.

How to Use Freeze Dried Fruit?

The possibilities are endless! Add them to cereal, yoghurt, trail mix, or smoothie bowls for a nutritious boost. Sprinkle them over salads or desserts for a pop of colour and flavour. You can even eat them straight out of the bag for a satisfying crunch.
But you also can get creative: Incorporate them into savoury dishes for a surprising twist or enjoy them with a dip such as hummus. They're also perfect for adding a sexy look to cocktails and overnight oats.
